Beetle Wing Bua - 4,090 baht

A beautiful handmade decorative "bua" or lotus bud that is approximately 13 centimeter tall.  The covering is made from Sternocera aequisignata or, as they are known in Thailand, "malaeng" beetle wings. The wings change color and appearance as the light strikes them from different angles making wonderful and unique conversation pieces.  For centuries the wings have been used in decorations and clothing adornment and recently by Charlize Theron's character in the movie “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

The beetle wings are collected from the ground at the end of the Thai rainy season, which gives the beetles their name of “malaeng khao phansa” or “rains retreat insect.”  This practice requires conservation of the beetles’ environment while not harming the beetles.  By developing modern uses for the wings, Santony Topiary desires to provide further incentives to develop sustainable techniques to make the world more beautiful while preserving the environment.

As each beetle-wing is slightly different, there may be small differences between the wonderful ball you receive and the photo.

The beetle wing balls are hand crafted by our master artisan.
